Blessings

I’ve always known how blessed I am, but today I realized how truly blessed I am. Today as I worked at the Feed the Community event with the Spartanburg Co Baptist Network, packaging pies that will be distributed tomorrow, it made me very sad (but also excited) to think that 10,000 people in Spartanburg Co will receive meals tomorrow for Thanksgiving. Tomorrow as I have Thanksgiving dinner with m…y truly AMAZING wife, children, some family & friends I will not be able to not think about all of those people in this Wonderful City that may be eating dinner alone. I’m so very thankful for what God has given me, and will think twice before I complain about little things in my life, because it is through those little things that God molds me into being God’s Man, doing God’s Work, for His Kingdom. God is truly the God of our Wonderful City.

What’s My Purpose

Posted in Daily Devo on November 19, 2011 by shawnshipman

Today’s scriptures

Luke 19:10

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.

Devotional

Do you know your purpose, the reason for which you were created? If not, consider what Jesus’ purpose was and imitate him. He was seeking and saving the lost. Discovering, your gifts, talents, interest and personality, may take some time and self examination. I have found that by staying active in my church and staying connected with strong Christian friends, discovering who I am is beginning to unravel easily. Eventually, people around us begin to recognize gifts and talents that perhaps we didn’t know we had. Good brothers and sisters in the Lord will begin to encourage you to utilize your gifting. In time, you will begin to see how God intended you to use the gifts and talents he gave you to help other people. Above anything else, we are to be the love of the lord on this earth. If you can be a living demonstration of the love of the Lord you will find your purpose.

3 Things you should know b4 and after you become a Christian…

Posted in Daily Devo on November 16, 2011 by shawnshipman

*This was borrowed from Bible Study Planet. I couldn’t agree more!*

There are three things a person needs to know in order to become a Christian and then live a fulfilling life in Christ.

1) You need to know you are a sinner

The Gospel begins with the bad news that we’re all sinners:

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom 3:23)

There is none righteous, no, not one. (Rom 3:10)

And our sin places us under God’s judgment:

The wages of sin is death… (Rom 6:23)

We often make the mistake of comparing ourselves to other people. When we do that we convince ourselves that we aren’t so bad. But it’s “the glory of God” that we fall short of. God compares our behavior to His own — not other people — and all of us fall short when held to this standard.

Why this is important to know: 1) We must recognize that we need be saved from our sins in order to be at peace with God and 2) That salvation must come from a source outside of us because we can’t live up to God’s standard.

2) You need to know how you can be forgiven for your sins

After laying out the problem, the Gospel then give us the solution to the problem of sin:

The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 6:23)

Christ Himself fulfilled all that God has required in His Law, and paid for our sins:

What the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. (Rom 8:3)

We are saved through Christ’s work, not our own:

It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. (Eph 2:8-9)

As we learned above, we can’t save ourselves from our sin because our good works can’t live up to God’s standard, but where our works are stained with sin and rejected, Christ’s work is perfect and is accepted.

When we say we recognize our need to be saved, and call on Christ to be our Savior, we mean we’re relying on His sacrifice to be a payment for our sins and to make peace with God on our behalf. When we do this God credits Christ’s perfection to us, we’re justified, and we’re forgiven for our sins.

Why this is important to know: Because only Jesus can save us from the penalty of our sin, any other way we try to make peace with God will fall short (Acts 4:12).

3) You need to know how you should respond to God’s forgiveness

Once we are at peace with God, through Christ, we are a new creation:

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. (2 Cor 5:17)

We no longer live for sin, we live for God:

Do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. (Rom 6:13)

You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. (1 Pet 2:9)

And our lives should bear good fruit:

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Gal 5:22-23)

Why this is important to know: In order to grow in Christ we need to know how to respond to God’s grace. What Christ has done for us effects how we live. We do good works, not to be saved, but because Christ has saved us (Eph 2:10). We forgive because Christ has forgiven us (Matt 6:12). We bless because Christ has blessed us (Eph 1:3). We served because Christ has served us (Mrk 10:45). We love because Christ has loved us (1 Jhn 4:19).

Unending Love

Ephesians 6:24

Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.

Devotional

This verse really opened my eyes to a truth about interacting with people in love. Although the verse is directed at loving Christ with an undying love, it also applies to our relations with others. What does it mean to love one another unconditionally or with an undying love? It means that my love for others is not based on how they treat me. I never could grasp that concept before; being able to love someone without having “conditions” attached to that love. For example, if people did not treat me properly, I would not be able to express my love towards them, because I was angry or feeling rejected or perhaps disappointed. My love was based on how they treated me. But because deep inside, I knew I truly loved them, I was able to learn how to express my love, even while I was still angry and upset with them, that is unconditional love. My love for others is an undying love, regardless of how I am treated by them. There is a great devotional on forgiveness at Prayer for Youth, please take time today to read it as well.

Love One Another

Todays scripture

John 13:34 -35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Devotional

There are many ways to express love to one another. A simple way to express love to someone would be to just let them know you are thinking about them. Today, we have so many resources available to help us keep in touch with those who we care about. A phone call, e-mail, text message, card or personal visit with someone to simply say ” I am thinking about you” is a practical way to express love. We can love one another through prayer as well. Take time to pray for the people you love today. Purpose to spend quality time with loved ones , your actions speak louder than your words

Luke 18:1

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.
